Poker is a card game that requires a combination of luck, skill and psychology. It is considered to be an ancestor of other card games such as blackjack and rummy. The game is played between two or more players and has a number of variants. The object of the game is to win the pot, which is the total amount of money paid by all players in a single round. Players can fold, call or raise during their turn. Players can also bluff other players in order to gain an advantage.

A player wins a hand by having the best cards or when all other players have folded. The best hand is a royal flush, which consists of the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of the same suit. The second highest hand is a straight flush, which includes five consecutive cards of the same suit. Three of a kind is a hand consisting of four cards of the same rank, and a full house is three matching cards plus an ace.

Each player antes an amount (typically a nickel) to be dealt two cards. Then there are rounds of betting. Each player can fold, check (not pay any bets), call (match a previous player’s bet) or raise (bet more than a previous player). There are various strategies to maximise winning hands and minimise losses from losing ones, known as MinMax.
