A poker hand consists of two cards in your personal hand and five community cards on the table. There are several different poker hands, and the highest hand wins. Some of these are: Four of a kind (all cards of the same rank), Flush (five consecutive cards of the same suit), Straight (five consecutive cards in order but not all of the same suit), Three of a kind (two distinct pairs of cards) and High card (this breaks ties).
In any poker game, players place an ante into the pot, and then each player is dealt five cards. After this, there is a round of betting. Players may choose to discard one or more of their cards and draw replacements. In this way, the dealer shuffles and adds the discards to the bottom of the draw stack. The player to the left of the button has the privilege or obligation to open the betting, and then each other player may either call his bet or raise it.
