Poker is a card game where players place chips (representing money) in the pot according to the rules of the variant being played. The player with the best hand wins all of the chips in the pot.
During the betting phase of each hand, players reveal their cards in turn. They can then choose to discard their cards and draw replacements, depending on the specific rules of the game being played. The player that begins this process is called the dealer and the other players who have not yet discarded their cards are called active players.
When a player has a strong starting hand, it is important to play aggressively in order to increase your chances of winning. However, it is also important to be aware of the fact that bluffing can sometimes lead to a loss, especially if players holding superior hands call your bets.
The game of Poker has many different variants, but they all share some basic features. The first phase of the game involves 2 mandatory bets (called blinds) being put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. Once these bets have been made, each player is dealt 2 cards face down, which are known as their hole cards. 3 more cards are then dealt face up on the table and are known as the flop. This triggers another round of betting, which starts with the player to the left of the big blind.
